Babylon Kulturelles Übersetzungsbüro

Berlin, June 9th to 11th, 2011

Babylon Kulturelles Übersetzungsbüro (Babylon Cultural Translation Agency) was a performative installation which ran on the U8 line of the Berlin Underground.

Eleven multi-cultural translators were hired to work for the Babylon Kulturelles Übersetzungsburo as agents, translating the announcements in the trains and stations into more than twenty different languages. Babylon Kulturelles Übersetzungsburo kiosks were located on the platforms of three stations along the U8 line, manned by agents with loud-speakers. A booklet was published and distributed at the kiosks and by the mobile agents, translating the german announcements of the underground. Agency staff also traveled on the trains, translating the announcements into the languages of the minority groups living along the routes.

They wore uniforms specially designed by irish milliner Laura Kinsella, and the publications were designed by Elva Carri.

This project was commissioned by NGBK in association with the BVG as part of their “U-10 – von hier aus ins Imaginare und weider zuruck” programme.
